An Ode to Gertrude Stein, of a Valentine to Sherwood Andersen

“I love words very much. I’ve always loved to talk, and I’ve always loved words — the words that rest in your mouth, what words mean and how you taste them and so on. And for me the spoken word can be used almost as a gesture.” – Martha Graham in a conversation with The New York Times, 1985.

An Ode to Gertrude Stein, of a Valentine to Sherwood Andersen (2013-2014) is a interrogative duet set to Stein reading her 1922 poem “A Valentine to Sherwood Anderson,” courtesy of New York City Library Recordings. It’s inception was a study on the rhythms and syncopation of words translated to mental imagery, then to movement in an ephemeral 3 dimensional space.
