Through a workshop by Dr. Martin Lorenz, I was drawn to the systematic process of building out a visual identity system.

Brief from Dr. Martin Lorenz: Draw a circle. Divide it into four quarter circles. These quarter circles are the components with which you are going to work to design assests, like symbols, lines, frames, patterns or labels. Use the assets to design a series of deliverables.

In my exploration, I dissected 3 distinct hierarchies to my flexible visual system – starting with an overarching grid system, then specified dimensions of a container system, and lastly the pieces that filled these containers.

The concept is such that the “pieces” can be interchanged as long as they fit within the “containers”, and the “containers” determine the interaction of the “pieces”. The overarching system maintains its structure for clear and organized visual language, and the set container system ensures visual consistency, no matter how the “pieces” might look like.

the side hustle of 2015 – 2021

For 6 years, I dedicated my career to dance performance and creating movement for the stage, while exploring what design meant to me as an artist.
why it mattered

That gave me the time and space to breathe new life into my interdisciplinary arts-based research around the fluid categorization of identities in tangent with the self.
